Tweaks For Creative Imagination

I read Michele’s post over the weekend on adjusting his WordPress theme to the MW1 theme (Monetize The Web) which is based around simple support for AdSense.

Seems to work well – paste in your own AdSense code into the building blocks (pages used as includes in the templates), and presto, you’ve got neat inline contextual ads – one after your first post, one after your second, and one after your last.

K2 (which is what I’ve based the CI3.5 theme on) works a little different in that it uses a seperate loop file to control the displays of posts, asides, comments etc. However, a little bit of tweaking and I’ve ripped out the AdSense support, gravatar support, and recent articles links and ported them to K2, dropping them in at the right spots along the loop. At least now you’ll get a little more effective ad placement with K2 running….

No thanks, don’t want your drugs

Enough is enough.

I feel the captcha is coming back in unless theres someone out there with a name and address for me so I can track down whoever it is has been bombarding the blog this morning with spam comments. Think I’ve broken a hundred at this stage since being offered Viagra with my breakfast, auto loans with my lunch, and God only knows what else in between.

Can we jail spammers? Or make them use dialup? Can we?

Upgrade Complete

So I made the upgrade from WP1.5 to WP2.02 this morning, which means I’ve also upgraded the theme ever so slightly. A few tweaks to be made this morning but its making it easier for me to manage the blog. I’ve also added a new contact page for those who have been asking how to get in touch with me.

I didn’t go into any real extensive testing for my old theme on the latest version of WP but if it turns out to be working fine I might well release it to the general public for download as I’ve found myself slipping into the K2 vibe recently. There’ll be some updates during the day or later on this evening.

Questions and comments always appreciated…

Some people might like the fact that the captcha is gone, hmmmm ;)

New blog features

Got a little time out this evening to make some additions to kenmc.com, whether you’ll notice them or not! I’ve added a nice Social Bookmarking plugin which covers the likes of Del.icio.us, Digg, Yahoo and a few other spots which comes courtesy of Max Power based of Paul Stamatiou’s work who handcoded the original version. Should help out with keeping track of posts, and it adds a nice splash of colour to the blog :)

I’ve also shifted around the comments to integrate the comment count into the post title (you’ll see the current comment count for each article in brackets) which takes away the link of italic text beneath each post that I never really liked. Nothing like a bit of cleaning on a rainy night….

Securing Creative Imagination

Frequent visitors and commenters on Creative Imagination will notice that if you go to post a comment on the blog now you will be met by a security graphic which must be retyped in order to complete your post. I’ve taken this measure due to increased spam comments that keep appearing, 30 of which arrived tonight in the space of a few minutes. Sorry to Michele who got caught in the middle while I was installing the plugin as well :)

Anyway, the plugin works as far as controlling posting, I’ll know within the next day or so if it does its job ‘exactly as it says on the tin’. For those of you interested, you can download the plugin for WordPress here.

Geotagging Kenmc.com

For those of you interested, here’s a good web tutorial on Geotagging, particularly handy when it comes to your blog as you can indentify the content of your blog to a specific country, or region, including your RSS feeds. It’s been around a small age already on the web and I have it active on DeviantART to check nearby Deviants, so now I can check nearby bloggers I suppose!

The site I was using was FeedMap (because blogs + maps = feedmap, isn’t it obvious?), still in beta as is most web 2.0 stuff floating around the web. Its a handy too to see who’s floating around your area.

If you’re interested, and using WordPress, you can insert the following code into your header.php which will geotag your website…

meta name="ICBM" content="52.6442, -7.2395"
meta name="geo.position" content="52.6442;-7.2395"

Then to tag my RSS feeds, I simply added the following lines between the before the last line of wp-rdf.php

geo:Point
geo:lat 52.6442 /geo:lat
geo:long>-7.2395 /geo:long
/geo:Point

(Don’t forget that you have to open and close your tags…. the icbm tags are coupled with the longitude and latitude namespaces)

Those locations will most likely stick you on the Dublin Road, just about at my office, only a stonesthrow from home anyway…

If that doesn’t make any sense to you at all the I suggest reading this tutorial on making your site and RSS feed locatable!

Followup…. if you’re feeling lazy… sign up to feedburner and you can geotag your RSS feed straight from there!

KENMC V3.0

Ok colour-loving and hating people… lets have your feed on this one! Spent an hour or two throwing this theme together, finding colours that work and match, something simple and bright that removes the oppression derived during the week.

Oppression! ;)

Anyway, food for thought is this theme. The header background is based on the ‘A New Spring’ theme, which is used over at Your Daily Feed this is my completely wild derivation of it, which I’m quite proud of actually. Maybe a little bit of work to do on the sidebar, but the Stylesheet is pretty much sewn up.

Try find half life now why don’t ya! With a little bit of A/B testing in mind, your comments and crits are sincerely appreciated!

KENMC.COM : The painters are in

I’m looking for colour opinions here. Also… according to my feedburner chicklet down the right of the page (which I’ve just added), I’ve got 14 people keeping tabs on my blog. Thanks for tuning in over the past while, and lets hope the blogging continues right through 2006.

Any of you 14 people fancy a suggestion or comment at the new colour scheme? Anyone remember the old one?
